Transportation and Communication

Transportation

Transportation is the means that helps people and their commodities to move from one place to another i.e. from their origin to destination . It is a basic infrastructure of a nation. Today's cities and towns are the results of transportation. Buying and selling won't be possible in the absence of transportation.

In ancient time, people used animals as their daily transportation, not only that they used animals to carry their materials. But slowly after the development of transportation, they used modern way of transportation like vehicles, airplane, ship, rail etc.

Types of transportation are:

  • Land transportation
  • Water transportation
  • Air transportation

Land transportation:

In Nepal, it is the best and cheapest means of transportation since, Nepal is a landloacked country not connected with seas. Nepal is an economically poor country, so people want a low price of transportation and accommodation in their daily life.

Due to the geographical region of Nepal, it is suitable means of transportation. People use various vehicles in their daily life which help them to travel and carry goods from one place to another. Some of them are motorcycles, bicycle, car, bus etc.

Highways of Nepal are as follows:

  1. Mahendra Highway - 1028 km (Mechi to Mahakali)
  2. Tribhuvan Highway - 192 km (Kathmandu to Bhainse)
  3. Araniko Highway - 133 km (Kathmandu to Kodari)
  4. Siddhartha Highway - 180 km ( Sunauli to Pokhara)
  5. Prithivi Highway - 174 km (Naubise to Pokhara)
  6. Pasang Lahmu Highway - 117 km (Kathmandu to Dhunche)
  7. Bhimdutta Panta Highway - 137 km (Dhangadhi to Dadeldhura)
  8. Madan Bhandari Highway - 52 km (Dharan to Dhankuta)
  9. B.P Koirala Highway - 159 km (Banepa to Bardibas)

Water Transportation:

Nepal is the landlocked country, due to which it's difficult to make water transportation. It is also one of the cheapest means of transportation for people. In Nepal, people use small wooden boats to cross the rivers and carry light weight goods. The nearest sea from Nepal is the Indian Ocean. Ships, boats, submarines etc are the examples of water transportation.

Air Transportation:

Air transportation is the expensive and fastest means of transportation. It transports people and goods by flying in the air. Air transportation in Nepal was started in 1953 AD. It provides both domestic and international flights to the people. In Nepal, few people only use it as their daily means of transportation.

Communication

Communication is the means of sending and receiving information between two or more people. It is also the act of conveying intended meaning to the another person through the use of mutually understood signs especially by means of electronic, print, radio, waves and several other means that may be e-mail, internet, telephone, radio, television, letter, fax, magazines, newspapers etc. We need to communicate to share information with other. The development of means of communication has made interpersonal relations close, interact and easy.

The different categories/ways of communication include:

  • Spoken or Verbal Communication: face-to-face, telephone, radio or television and other media.
  • Non-Verbal communication: body language, gestures, how we dress or act.
  • Written Communication: letters, e-mail, books, magazines, the internet or via other media.
  • Visualizations: graphs and charts, maps, logos and other visualizations can communicate messages.

Importance of communication:

Communication plays an important role in the development of the country. It reduces the distance and makes the flow of information faster and easily available. It also saves time, budget and labour. Information, ideas and opinions can be shared among many persons at any given time through modern means of communication. It is the main thing in a culture, society, region etc.

By communicating our needs, feelings, ideas and experiences we are able to engage others to work with us in mutual problem-solving. Communication leads to the spread of new ideas. The history of communication in our country starts from 1880 AD after the introduction of postal services. We have four thousand post offices in our country. Besides, the newspapers like Gorkhapatra, The Rising Nepal, The Kantipur Post, The Himalayan times etc. are the different means of communication which uses written words, pictures, and symbols to communicate.

Today, our society is highly influenced by the use of modern means of communication. We cannot think of completion of any of our work of time without using it. By using the means of communication, one can pass information, ideas and opinions with the click of one’s thumb in just a second. The relatives who are living thousands of miles away can be seen in the device held in one’s palm. So, the means of communication have contracted the world.

Communication fosters education, trade, and relationships. It also promotes cultural exchange and conflict resolution. In modern times, there are many colleges, schools, and universities which offer online courses. Getting admitted in such course demands the use of modern means of communication. Today, the world without communication is gloomy.
