Miss. Isha, a business graduate from IIM, Kolkata is currently searching for a suitable strategy to sustain and expand her tea processing business. She was looking for ideas for the same. To explore the market potential in the international arena, Isha recently visited the Japan international exhibition of organic tea. She saw good opportunities' existence for Nepalese tea outside the country.

Isha conducted a market survey to identify the problems and prospects of tea business in view of exporting. As indicated by the survey, the local demand for tea has been increasing and there is also a high demand for Nepalese tea in the international market. Lack of uniformity in quality, use of outdated technology in tea processing, keen competition from Indian tea, unauthorised outflow of semi-processed tea to India and lack of adequate protection from the government were the main problems identified by the survey. Furthermore, political instability, frequent bands, undue pressure from different interest groups, lack of easy accessibility to bank loans, implementation of labour legislation and similar other difficulties were also the prominent issues that had adversely affected Nepal's tea industry.

Nepal has liberalized its trade sector to a considerable extent. Foreign tea has penetrated into the Nepalese market, creating a competitive environment in this business. This has affected most of the local tea processing units. Some of the units were closed down due to growing competition. Isha also experienced similar difficulties running her tea- processing unit. She is now looking for an appropriate strategy to manage her unit effectively. Questions:

1. What are the major problems in this case?

2. Identify the major components in the task and general environment of the Nepalese tea industry.

3. In your opinion, what are the opportunities and threats for Isha's business?

4. In view of the growing globalization, what strategies should Isha adopt to remain competitive in the market?
