Size of Population

Size of population means number or quantity to have less or more population of a certain place, at a certain time. Size of population is always changing.

It gives the idea of how many people are living in a per square area. It calculates the density of people in a particular area. 

Size of population is controlled by following factors:

  • Emmigration: to leave a particular country
  • Immigration: to come to a particular country
  • Birth rate: increases the size of population
  • Mortality rate: decreases the size of population

Benefits of size of population are:

  1. It helps to make planning.
  2. It helps to maintain balance between population and expenses.
  3. It helps for proportional development.
  4. It also helps for grand local participation.

Population growth rate

Population growth rate means increase in total number of population by birth and net migration. It is calculated in percentage. Nepal's population growth rate is 1.35%. It means the population is increasingat the rate of 1.35 .

Causes of population growth in Nepal

  • Early marriage
  • Polygamy
  • High infant mortality rate
  • Desire of son
  • Ignorance
  • Economic importance of children
  • Desire of large children
  • Lack of population education

Reason of decrement of population growth in the census of 2011:

In the last census, population growth rate was 2.25 . But it is decreased by 1.2% because of following reasons:

  1. Foreign employment service: More than 20 lakhs people are in abroad.
  2. Awareness
  3. Right age at marriage
  4. Gender equality

Reasons of decrement of population from 1911 to 1930:

  • Unscientific census
  • Death by disease
  • Death of soldiers in first world war
  • Death by natural calamities
