Caring For Earth in Grade 9

Introduction to The Earth

The earth is the common home of so many species of animals and plants that exists. It is the only living planets among the other all nine planet. The life does not exist in any other planet except in the earth. There are many living beings including the microorganism to the large animals like the blue whale. The earth is always moving. The planet earth is only a tiny part of the universe. It looks like the ball. Its structure is made of rock, soil and water.

The structure of the earth is divided into two main parts: atmosphere and geosphere. The lithosphere (main component), hydrosphere and biosphere are under geosphere. The outer part of the earth is called atmosphere. In atmosphere mostly gas exists, but traces of dust particles are also found.

The surface of the earth is covered by land. Around our place, the ridge of a mountain, steep slopes, rivers and rivulets, tanks, ponds are seen. There is water in the earth in abundance on the earth. The land topography of different parts of the earth is different. There is favorable temperature for the living beings like air, water and land on the earth. The living beings on the earth are survived due to such natural resources. If the conservation of different spheres is not made, there will be no living beings on the earth. It is the common habitat for all living beings.

Components of caring for the Earth

The earth is made up of hydrosphere, lithosphere and atmosphere. These three components have supported life on the earth and made it a biosphere. The conservation of all the physical and biological aspects of the earth is the concept of caring for the earth. It is imperative to implement the programs of conservation and promotion of lithosphere, atmospheres and hydrosphere to maintain the earth as a biosphere.

The world conservation strategy (WCS) was formulated in 1980 A. D. This strategy has explained the policies of the conservation and sustainable development of natural resources of the world. It also help to set a guideline required to carry out the development and conservation activities in an integrated way. It has and caring the earth. A strategy "Sustainable development and caring the earth" has been executed for the effective implementation of the world conservation strategy. The government, international agencies and non- governmental organization have supported the strategy of caring the earth.

The major principal of WCS is enlisted below:

  1. The wide gap between rich and poor should be reduced so that the environmental problems resulted by this can be reduced.
  2. The renewable resources should be produced more and non renewable resources should be minimized.
  3. Alternative sources of non - renewable resources should be sought.
  4. The rich nations should help to improve the living standard of the people of the poor countries.
  5. Human activities concerning development activities should contribute to improve the living standard.

The earth is the habitat of all living beings. For the healthy living of plants and animals caring for the earth is a must. A wise use of natural resources, minimum use of non-renewable resources, sustainable use of resources, promotion and use of renewable resources, control of environmental pollution and maintenance of the earth as a suitable habitat for living beings are known as the activities of caring for the earth.

Need for Caring for the Earth

The earth is a common habitat of all the living creatures. All the living creatures sustain their life by using the resources available on the earth. People conduct various activities on the earth to fulfill their own needs and demands. They use various natural resources such as forest, land, water etc while constructing such works.

At the same time development works pollute earth. Some effects are seen immediately whereas some are seen after certain times. The earth is the only habitat for all living beings. Its our duty and responsibility to protect our earth. Caring of earth means maintaining the existence of living beings.

Some reasons for the caring of the earth are as follows:

  • Conservation of the Earth
  • Conservation of natural heritage
  • Conservation of the Living beings

Conservation of the Earth

The main objective of caring of the earth is to help the earth in a sustained way conducting different programmes. For this, conservation should be done for the natural condition of the earth, structure and other related aspect. They should be allowed to run in their natural condition. The program of caring for earth helps to achieve the goal. The conservation leads to the caring for the earth.

Conservation of natural heritage

The internal parts of the earth are minerals, air, water, plants, land and animals. Improper use of these resources leads to the various problems such as global warming, imbalance ecosystem, climate change, scarcity of food and so on. So, conservation of these resources helps in the caring of the earth.

Conservation of the Living beings

The earth is the habitat of mankind and other kinds of living beings. There are innumerable aquatic and terrestrial living beings on the earth. They are interrelated. The destruction of one affects the other. So, caring for the earth should be done for the conservation of living beings which protects the natural status of the earth.

Methods of Caring of the Earth

All the people in the earth should make a habit of caring for the earth. Development of such habit helps for their own existence. Some of the measures for caring for the earth are described below:

  • Involvement in conservation program:By gaining the knowledge of nature and making good inquiry, we should participate in the program of caring earth. It is important for us to have knowledge about ecosystem and structure of the earth. We should participate in conservationprogramof theearth.
  • Knowledge of Structure of Earth:It is essential to every people in the earth to have knowledge about structure of earth. It motivates towards the conservation of the earth.
  • Nature friendly development:Many people conduct various development activities for their own sake. While conducting such activities it should not affect the nature and environment. Such changes may be detrimental to the existence of living beings.
  • Respect of nature:Everyone should not try to keep nature in their own control rather they should live according to the law of nature. Nature is very important for all living creatures so we must respect them as our parents and friends. They should be conserved and protected.
  • Participation in conservation program :It is the prime responsibility of the human beings to participate actively in all conservation and protection programmes. The conservation of resources is possible with the combined effort of human beings.

Earth as A Living Planet

The planet earth has various kinds of qualities in comparison to various planets and satellites in the solar system. Its climate, rotation and revolution, temperature, status, etc. are the main qualities. The distance between sun and the earth is fifteen crore kilometers. It is a suitable habitat for living beings. The living beings are able to live on the earth because of these features. The earth is a large habitat for living beings. The food, air, water and shelter needed for the living beings are made available from it. Various kinds of creatures and organisms lives in different natural regions such as land, rivers, sea, forest, etc. Every region is important part of the earth. We should take earth as "Our Common Houses" So, earth is a habitat of living beings.

The earth being a huge natural habitat, there are different kinds of creatures on it. There are different birds and animals such as lion, tiger, elephant, vulture, eagle, etc. living on land. There are many aquatic animals such as fish, whale, sea horse, etc. There are also amphibians such as frog, salamander, etc. on the earth. The existence of living beings is running due to joint adjustment of different spheres. Due to this reason, the earth has become the habitat of different living beings.

Some important characteristics are mentioned below:

  • Water
  • Structure of land
  • Heat and Light
  • Air
  • Food Materials
  • Seasonal change
  • Recycling

Water

The layer of the water in the earth is called hydrosphere. Hydrosphere occupies about seventy one percent of the total area of the earth. The earth's hydrosphere chiefly consist oceans, but includes all water surfaces in the world including lakes, rivers and underground waters. About 3.5% of the total mass of the ocean consists of salt. The oceans are also the reservoir of atmospheric gases, which are essential for the survival of many aquatic animals and plants. It also affects climate. It is found in the surface of the earth and on low region of the earth. Water is found in various forms such as river, lakes, ponds, rain, sea, etc. All the living organisms are depended upon water for their existence.

Structure of land

The surface of land on the earth is called lithosphere, which occupies about twenty nine of the total area. It is the important part of the earth. It is extended from surface to the inner part of the earth. The structure of land varies with altitude, wetland, topography, plain, etc. Variation in land structure creates variation in the ecosystem of a place. The plants and animals vary according to diversity of the ecosystem. This variation in the land feature has created a favorable environment for different plants, animals and microorganisms on the earth.

Heat and Light

Heat and light are obtained from the sun regularly. The plants and trees prepare their food through the process of photosynthesis with the help of sunlight. We get crops, fruits, and vegetables from plant and trees. With the means of water cycle rainfall is occurred due to solar heat. It helps the creatures to grow, develop, flower and fruit. The existence of all the creatures is established on the earth due to the light and heat.

Air

The layer of the air that surrounds the earth is called atmosphere. Atmosphere contains various types of gases like nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, inert gases and dust particles. Living creatures exists in the earth due to presence of oxygen gas. The uppermost part of the atmosphere (Ozone layer) prevents the entering of harmful ultraviolet rays in the surface of the earth. It prevents global warming. Since light rays are mechanical wave, it requires medium to come up to the surface of the earth. In this case, atmosphere plays the role of mechanical wave. The heat that comes from the sun has significant role for living creatures in conducting their physical activities.

Food Materials

The food grains are essential for the livelihood of people and living organisms. Humans get their food from plants and animals. The plant can get food materials from the process of photosynthesis. The herbivores animals get their food from grass, plants and trees. The carnivores animals get food from other animals.

Seasonal change

The earth rotates in its axis and revolves around the sun. Due to revolution of the earth around the sun four different seasons are created. They are spring, summer, autumn and winter. Changes in climate, day and night, change in temperature; rainfall pattern, flow of wind, snowfall, etc. are the natural process. Due to these changes different seasons are created which increase the variation in the living beings by increasing their adaptability in various environment conditions.

Recycling

The cycling of the gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and nutrients and minerals in the soil are the examples of recycle. After completing a life span all living being die and their dead bodies degrade and mix with the soil by the action of microorganisms. Form the soil, plants absorbs essential nutrients and minerals. These types of recycling of materials in the ecosystem have been important factors for the earth as a living planet.

Major Programmes and Local Efforts for Caring of Earth

Introduction :

Earth is the common home of all the living beings. All the human beings they live in the earth . Human beings they can find all kind life supporting resource from the earth.People they do various activities inside the earth like , construction of a road, building , bridge ,industries etc. Which are very important for human beings but the human beings they don't know it affects the earth . Then , there will be different types of pollution , different types of natural disaster etc. The effects which we see now may be very dangerous the upcoming days .

Conservation of living beings; Earth is the common home of living beings . There are many living things which live inside the earth . some of the living beings live in water and some of living beings live in the land . They all have their own characters. If any one of them will be destroyed then it will harm in the balance of environment it means it will effect to the earth .So , this is why we should conserve plant and animals. The conservation of plant and animals will help to balance the environment or conserve the environment which will help to make earth live the longer life .

Conservation of Natural Resources: All the things like air , water , forest , minerals are present in the earth .Due to growing population people, they used maximum use of natural resources .They use natural resources to fulfill their need .People they used more natural resources due to which they can suffer from the landslide , flood. deforestation , acid rain etc problems . So , before facing this types of problem people they should try to conserve the natural resources and try to make the sustainable use of natural resources. It is responsibility of everyone to care for earth. The care and conservation only made by a single country is not enough and also not possible. So, all the countries should adopt the related conservation programmes of the earth in their respective region according to the need.

Major Programmes for Caring of Earth:

The acts and laws should be formulated for the conservation and preservation of the natural resources of the earth such as air, water, forest, land, birds, animals, etc. Such programme should be executed effectively. Such effects are being made by different countries. Our country should do same for caring the earth.

  1. Environmental Planning:Each and every nation conducts various development activities for the promotion of economic, social and cultural aspects of the society. These activities should be carried out for the sustainable development and conservation of the resources.
  2. Worldwide conservation strategy:The earth is the common shelter of all living creatures. Deterioration in the environment may destroy the existence of the living creatures. So, policies and programmes for the conservation of the earth should be formulated on international level.
  3. Awareness Raising Programme:Various programmes and campaign should be launched in order to aware people about caring of earth, its importance and defects. It also helps to increase people participation. Different countries are conducting such programmes according to needs.
  4. National conservation Policy:There must be a national policy to conserve the aspects such as natural, cultural, biological, physical and social aspects of the earth. Many countries after drafting are executing them. Thus, such policy helps slot in caring of earth.

Man and Earth

Earth supports the life of millions of living organisms. Human beings are also one of them. Human beings are social animals. Human beings use natural resources of the earth to fulfil their various needs and desires. They conduct various activities on earth. The population of the world is increasing day by day. People are using natural resources in a very large amount and fastly to fulfil the increasing needs and desires of the people. Various developmental and constructional activities are done on Earth. If they are done without proper planning and Environmental Impact Assessment, it adversely affects the natural earth. Various activities of humans like, deforestation, pollution, explosive activities etc cause various problems in nature like flood, landslide, acid rain, climate change, loss of biodiversity, ozone depletion, etc.

The Earth is not only the home or place for humans but millions of living organisms live in the earth with humans. If we continue exploiting or polluting the earth it not only affects the human but it also affects the life of millions of living organisms. We should not harm other organisms to fulfill our needs and desires. We should respect and honour the creations of nature. People should be aware of the importance of nature.

Measures to improve the interaction between Man and the Earth

  • We should develop environment friendly attitude and behaviour.
  • Sustainable development should be done.
  • More priority should be given to forestry and agriculture education.
  • There should be the proper and rational utilization of natural resources.
  • Our avtivities should not go beyond the carrying capacity of the Earth.

Local Effort of Caring for the Earth

  1. Public Participation:The public places, rivers and rivulets, field and aquatic region should be conserved and preserved by the people of all community.
  1. Protection of forests:The conservation and preservation of forest should be done by the local sectors. The greenery can be increased by reforestation around the open fields. The dry wood, timber, dry twigs, etc. can be collected from the forest. But we should not destroy growing small plants and trees.
  1. Control of Soil Erosion:Soil erosion should be stopped in the cultivable land and field. Cultivation should be done by adopting terrace system. Plant and trees should be planted in the edge of the field which helps in conservation of soil.
  1. Conservation of Watershed:Watershed is a natural resource of water. It should be protected for conservation of water. To protect sources of water, the plant and trees should be conserved around these places.
  1. Preservation of the Cultural heritage:The cultural heritage of the country is the internal part of the environment. The monastery, temple, gumba, mosque and religious sites should be protected by maintenance. The peoples participation should be increased in the conservation of such cultural heritage.
  1. Fire of forests:The fire should not be made in precipitous hill side, forest and open field. Such work should be stopped.
